U.S. Senate Resolution 533, introduced by Senator Marco Rubio of Florida, designates September 2014 as “National Spinal Cord Injury Awareness Month”. This designation is especially timely given the progress being made toward a cure for spinal cord injury at The Miami Project to Cure Paralysis.

MIAMI PROJECT DOCTORS PERFORM FIRST SCHWANN CELL TRANSPLANT

Doctors at The Miami Project to Cure Paralysis, a Center of Excellence at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, performed the first-ever Food and Drug Administration approved Schwann cell transplantation in a patient with a new spinal cord injury. The procedure, performed at the University of Miami/Jackson Memorial Medical Center, is a Phase 1 clinical trial designed to evaluate the safety and feasibility of transplanting the patient’s own Schwann cells.

Volunteer Chapters

 

Dedicated volunteers, many of whom are spinal cord injured (SCI), have a family member or close friend afflicted by SCI, draw upon their individual communities and resources to create greater awareness and raise funds on a grassroots level.  Chapters are a vital element to reaching The Miami Project’s goal -- a cure for paralysis.

THE 29th ANNUAL GREAT SPORTS LEGENDS DINNER

Tom Brokaw From NBC News to Serve as Master of Ceremonies

 

The Buoniconti Fund to Cure Paralysis, will present the 29th Annual Great Sports Legends Dinner at the Waldorf Astoria on Monday, September 29, 2014. The annual event, hosted by NFL Hall of Famer Nick Buoniconti and his son Marc, and chaired by Mark Dalton, raises funds to support the ground-breaking spinal cord injury research done by researchers at The Miami Project to Cure Paralysis – the world’s most comprehensive spinal cord injury research center which is based at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. Tom Brokaw will serve as Master of Ceremonies of the dinner, which honors philanthropic heroes and sports legends that inspire and motivate those affected by spinal cord injuries.

The celebration assembles sports legends, celebrities, philanthropic icons and corporate leaders to support the efforts of The Buoniconti Fund Board of Directors and numerous longtime benefactors. The 2014 Great Sports Legends include Hakeem Olajuwon, Warren Sapp, Pedro Martinez, Joe Sakic, Bill Cowher, Mary Lou Retton and Lauryn WilliamsBill Simon will receive the Outstanding Business Leader Award.  Grant Hill and Calvin Hill will accept the 2014 Buoniconti Fund Award. Erik Compton will be the 2014 Inspiration Award Recipient.
